FCCC at RBCC - 5-May-2012 - Reported by Drumeel Thakkar
It was evident that this was the first 40 / 40 game of the season, at least for RBCC; stiff bodies, rusty movements and lethargy. However, it looked like the making of a good game with both teams pumped and in their new uniforms (FCCC in yellow and RBCC in Greens)
Having won the toss, the captain of the home team (RBCC) decided to bat first. RBCC got off to a brisk start with Faiq and Misbah taking the score to 40 odd runs at the end of 7 overs. FCCC was patient and looked like finding their rhythm when FAIQ was dismissed to well judged catch at the boundary. RBCC lost wickets in quick succession after that and the score read 50 odd runs for the loss of 3 wickets. It took a brilliant 50 by Ishan Rao in a partnership with new comer Ishan Pardeshi and a useful contribution by Jay Shah who took RBCC score to 119. The partnership was broken and another collapse resulted RBCC being dismissed for 161 in 36 overs. From FCCC, Gopal (4 wicktes), Omar and Mike Riley (3 wickets) were the pick of the bowlers.
FCCC innings had a blazing start with Ravi and Ganesh piling on runs and taking advantage of some rusty and stiff RBCC bowlers. Reaching 70 runs in about 11 overs, FCCC were running away with the game. Misbah brought on the spinners who started applying the brakes. The spinners (Drumeel and tahir) found their rythms in the second overs and choked FCCC. Tahir was the pick of the bowlers who seemed to be running through the top order. Altaf was brought in who got 2 quick wickets,. After a flurry of wickets, Mike Riley and Andrew stabilized the ship and made the odds tip back in FCCC’s favor with a steady partnership. Andrew delivered lusty and confident shots and seemed to be at ease to take FCCC home. A blinder of a catch by Altaf dismissed Mike which almost turned the game back. Andrew had different thoughts and steadily took FCC closer to the target with a good partnership with Rajesh. With 9 runs to win Andrew stepped out and hit a boundary. With 5 runs to get for a win from 3 overs, FCCC was the clear favorite but a looping leg spinner by Misbah tempted Andrew to step out and finish it big Only to find the safe hands of Ishan Rao at the long on boundary. Game over, RBCC took the game and won by 4 runs.
A well fought game and a close finish. Perfect start to the 2012 season. Tahir was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 23 runs in his 8 overs. Ishan Rao was awarded the man of the match for his half century and 2 wickets in a tight bowling spell.
A special mention to Gopal Susarla of FCCC for walking off to a bat-pad catch when it was tough for the umpire to figure out. RBCC appreciates this gesture of Gopal and holds him in high regards for this.
