Team Colorado participating in Labor Day Western Regional Inter League T20 Tournament

Sep 14th, 2017 - Reported by Sandeep Bollampally

During the Labor Day weekend a few days back, Team Colorado finished in 4th place out of 6 teams with 2 wins and 3 losses in this tournament. The matches were played on professionally maintained turf pitches at Woodley Park in Los Angeles. This was the first time that most of the team members played on such pitches and was one of the main reasons the team was excited to participate in this tournament. The fast outfields which rewarded ground shots were an added bonus.

The team recorded wins in their first and last matches against Utah and Arizona respectively to start and finish the weekend on high notes. These were the two matches that Colorado wanted to win at any cost since these 3 teams play in similarly sized and organized leagues in their home states. The bowlers laid the foundation for both wins which were played in the morning on green pitches which assisted swing bowling. Against Utah, Prasanna Damodaran took 4 wickets and Chaithanya Chava took 3, while against Arizona, the wickets were shared evenly amongst the Colorado bowlers. With the bat, Kamal Ponday led the team's charge in both matches scoring a combined 70 runs while Rohit Saini scored 34 against Arizona. In these low-scoring matches, these knocks were match-winning ones!

The other three matches were played against strong opposition from massive cricket leagues where national team level and semi-professional players play every weekend. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Colorado came close to pulling off amazing upsets.

The first was against NWCL (Washington state) where the team lost by around 20 runs chasing 188. Colorado at one point was 120 in 11 overs with 7 wickets in hand but couldn't close out the match. Kamal Ponday and Sandeep Bollampally score near-50s. The match nonetheless left the team in high spirits after the first day giving the team hope of winning the rest of the matches and making the tournament finals.

Against NCCA the following morning, Colorado once again bowled superbly on the fresh morning pitch to reduce the opposition to 40/6 at one point. However, sensible batting by NCCA's lower order helped them reach 128 in their 20 overs. Colorado tried their best to chase the total down but fell short by around 20 runs once again, despite heroics by Chaithanya Chava with the bat. Rohit Saini was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets.

At this point, Colorado was basically out of the running for the finals and they started their 4th match in 2 days against pre-tournament favorites and home team SCCA. Bodhayan Chakraborty scored a blistering 50 when he opened the batting but no one supported him and Colorado closed at an under-par score of ~130. SCCA's batsmen took full toll of the exhaustion that swamped the Colorado team and chased down the target with ease.

Ultimately, the tournament was won by NCCA in a close and entertaining final against NWCL.

Overall, it was an excellent experience for the team to play in an out-of-state competitive tournament on turf pitches where the opposition included former US national team batsmen, fast bowlers and spinners. The tournament was very well organized with lunches and refreshments provided on all match days.

There were a number of good performances by members of Team Colorado which can't all be listed in this tournament summary but it would be accurate to say that every one of the traveling 12 players contributed to the team's wins and near-wins that weekend!

Thanks to all the team members for traveling that weekend and paying out of their own pockets to play in over 100 degree heat and under smoky skies (caused by nearby bush fires). Also, thanks to CCL for the support and contributing some money to alleviate some of the players' burden of expenses.

Team Colorado thus closes out its 2017 season when it performed admirably in LA and dominated Utah and Boise teams in a triangular tournament held in Utah earlier in the summer.
